A couple of photos of Monterey, CA

Last weekend, Leo and I went to Monterey to check out the town. The weather was gorgeous. Fresh air. Nice views. It was simple and sweet. Too bad for us everyone and their moms decided to go the same day.

Leo and I ate at The Whole Enchilada off Hwy 1 in Moss Landing.

I know. I take a lot of photos of our food. But this was a really good seafood enchilada Leo ordered.

My dish, the chamachon es muy excellente.

Leo's dessert. Chocolate mousse.

My dessert. Creme brule.

If you've read the Steinbeck novel "Cannery Row" this is the famous place. Lots of tourist.

Monterey is beautiful. But I'm really looking forward to Maui this weekend. :)

This is another post where I talk about my hair

Finally did my hair after much debating. I was hoping to have my entire head light brown, but since my stylist said that I had too much color in my hair already, I would do some major damage to it by bleaching my entire head. So I had it trimmed and added brown highlights. It turned out fantastic. I think I may have found a winner and found my new stylist in the Bay Area. Thank God for these guys. My only gripe is that they spelled compliments as "complements" on their website. They are totally going to get dinged for that on Yelp.

Sorry, my webcam's quality is not so hot.

San Diego to Sacramento in a week

I'm lagging with my photo updates. Here are a few from San Diego and then the following weekend in Sacramento. Pictures of Fresh & Easy (my favorite grocery store in San Diego; we're working on getting these stores up in the bay area soon), Oceanside beach, San Diego County Fair, Father's Day lunch, the Capitol and Capitol Park.

Cut? Color? What?!

So I haven't decided on what I really want to do with my hair this summer. Leo says to change the color. Hmm. I don't know.

What do you think?

I'm thinking you don't give a shit.

All right! Cool.

Speak of the devil

So I returned to the restaurant for the second time and the owner recognized me right away. He came up to my table and handed me this letter he received in the mail from the wonderful people of Yelp.

He thanked me for the kind and honest words which was honestly the most adorable thing ever. And it was because the very first time I tried this place out, I instantly fell in love. So I told him I would write a really good review about it and viola! Instant loving from Yelp.

If you are ever in the neighborhood, please stop by at this wonderful slice of heaven in your mouth restaurant. And tell them Mary Anne, a Yelper, sent you.

Goog Food

The other day, Leo and I went to his work and ate at one of Google's many cafes. Each cafe has a genre. Depends on what you're feeling at the moment. We were feeling American since we almost never do. Best part about my meal was the FREE part. I'm almost convinced that I was Jewish in my past life. And these gas prices aren't helping either.

Scarf from Paris

Or to some, a kaffiyeh, the traditional Arab headdress. I thought the whole Rachel Ray Dunkin' Donut advertisement symbolizing terrorist thing was a bit comical.

Anyhow, Mel bought me a scarf from Paris. If anything is killer, it's my damn good looks.

Annoyed

You know, there's so many things people can be annoyed about right now, like having a hunchback or not being able to drink clean water.

I, on the other hand, am annoyed by these juniper trees in front of our living room window. They don't do anything but collect cobwebs. On my weekends, I go outside with my broom and remove those suckers from touching the wall. And then I take a hose and wash it out of the trees only to find them there AGAIN the very next day. It's very annoying and I'm sure the spiders feel the same way about me. But these trees... they're useless and unattractive. I went on the city website to check if there are any ordinances about removing trees of that size. I don't think there are. *evil grin*

It's hot hot hot

The temperature for this week is averaging triple digits in our area. There's a heat wave advisory so I suggest you Bay Area folks to keep cool and drink plenty of water.

Kailee and I went to Central Park this afternoon to chill, ride her bike, and watch the ducks in the pond. Santa Clara has their own mini Central Park which I absolutely love. To beat the heat, there were plenty of trees and shade so we didn't worry too much about skin cancer.

The park's recreation is also a plus. They have an International Swim Center that includes one diving pool, a huge lap pool, and a shallow kiddy pool. People who have participated in the olympics have practiced here. There are volleyball courts and basketball courts that are open til 3am. They have bowling greens (whatever that is), a humongous new library, playgrounds for the kiddies, a big barbeque area, people taking tai chi lessons on the grass, and tennis courts. There's heaps of things you can do in this 52 acre park. It's a great place to take a walk and hang out with the kiddies.

Cafe Rosalena

I gave this place great ratings on Yelp for their excellent chicken caesar salad. Again, Jane was the one who introduced to me to this place. It's located on the Alameda in San Jose.

People come here just for this signature salad. They make their own dressing which makes it all the better. And the quality of the chicken and the veggie is superb. I'm not exaggerating. This place has really damn good salad.

They're also known for their breakfast burritos. People swear it's the best. But we'll have to see about that when I come back. I'm a huge critic when it comes to great Mexican food. I'm from San Diego, so no NorCali son-of-a-bitch is going to tell me what's good Mexican food. Damn straight.

So if you guys are in the area, check Cafe Rosalena out. I heard she's pretty.

Going, going, back, back, to Maui, Maui

Two months ago, Leo and I decided that we were going back to Maui for our yearly vacation. Our initial plan was to go to Kauia, but that fell through. This will be my second time going to Hawaii this year. Rough life, I know.

In 2006, we stayed in Kihei for a week at the Kihei Beach Resort, shown in the beginning of this video.

This time we will be staying north of Lahaina, which is a touristy part of the island. I don't really mind it at all. We don't plan to stay indoors 98% of the time anyway. The weather is perfect enough to even sleep on the sand.

The significance about Maui is that this is the place where we were engaged. Leo had asked me to marry him at the Keanae Peninsula on April 23, 2006. We were on the road to Hana. You can view a video of the peninsula at 00:47.

Everything about our engagement was absolutely perfect. Except for the part when I started bawling uncontrollably after Leo had proposed. Five minutes and three snot stains on his shirt later, I finally said yes. I wasn't ready for that one.

The best part about Maui, is the snorkeling. We really enjoyed the snorkeling in Molokini Crater . We woke up really early to take a ferry out. Hopefully we can do something like this: a video of a crew that went to Molokini and sighted a large whale shark. People dove in to experience an opportunity of a life time.

How cool is that? This was around the time we went to Maui.

Although we didn't do anything as remotely cool as swimming with a whale shark, we did see some humpback whales swimming by while we were snorkeling. Somebody yelled out, "whales!" I looked up and saw them passing by from a distance. Just the fact that we were sharing the same body of water with these magnificent mammals was pretty cool in itself.

For some really awesome breath-taking views of the island, we did the group bike ride down the Haleakala volcano to see the sunrise.

Lastly, we went scuba diving near Wailea. This has to be one of the best experiences I've had in my life. We took an early class and made our way out towards the shore just a little bit before noon. We saw all sorts of wildlife and sea turtles! The sea turtles were so cute.

A photo of Leo and I swimming after a sea turtle.

If you're ever planning to take a trip to Maui, feel free to ask me for some activity advice. I still have the names of the companies we've used. Unfortunely, Yelp has not reached a high demand for users in Hawaii. Otherwise I would have just posted it there.

At any rate, Maui is for lovers.

So my lover and I will return in August.

I got me a piano

On Sunday afternoon, my piano will be delivered to my house from Scotts Valley. I bought this used as you can tell from the picture, but it's in good condition. I actually pulled these photos from the ad so the quality sucks. I can't tell you how excited I am. I've wanted a piano in my house for a long time now. And since we have a pretty decent sized living room, this will fit perfectly. Last night, Leo and I moved our couch closer to the fireplace and tv. He's always wanted the couch closer to the tv so it worked out for the both of us. It's small and simple. Best part of all, I can finally revisit some pieces I've been meaning to practice for a very long time. Maybe I'll post a YouTube video of me playing a tune for you. =)

Bliss

Went to Fairfield today for work. Yeah, I know. You are probably wondering where the hell Fairfield is. I know this because that is exactly how I felt when I heard about Fairfield. It's a town not far from Sacramento. Very small in population and of course, my favorite fact, the Jelly Belly Factory! Jelly Belly is the only thing putting that city on the map. Quiet sad, honestly. We drove through five counties just to get there and the views were anything but spectacular. Just a bunch of green grassy hills and tiny rural and suburban towns with a bunch of cows. Strangely, I do kinda like it. It reminds me of the Windows XP "Bliss" background. Like these photos I took while driving up to the city a few weeks ago:

Does this look familiar to you non-Mac user folks?

It's the most wonderful time of the year

Once every Spring, the city picks up large amounts of trash for free. Old furniture, boxes, junk, etc. It's spring cleaning time. As you can see from the photo, I'm taking advantage of this opportunity to get rid lots of shit. I had fun last weekend dumping heaps of un-used crap I wanted to get rid of ever since we moved here. Leo told our neighbor, Jean, that this was my favorite time of the year. And it is! And the timing could not be any better. My folks are in town this weekend and we've got a lot of house work to do. I'm really glad they have this program. You see, another reason why we like living here.

Hawaii Trip 2008

Happy Friday.

Finally a weekend to relax. I know that sounds kind of retarded considering I was in Hawaii (on the island of Oahu) last week, but you have no idea.

In a nutshell... with photos from the collaborative efforts of me and my wonderful co-workers.

We stayed at the Moana Surfrider Hotel (A Westin Hotel) on Waikiki Beach. It's actually the first hotel establishment (1901) on Waikiki and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Behind the hotel is Waikiki Beach!

From the outside, it looks like a mansion.

From our balcony view to the right is the city.

And to the left is Waikiki Beach.

Inside the hotel elevators with Mel.

This meal cost me nothing but hard dedicated work.

My boss.

Breakfast the very next morning on the veranda. That's James.

And here's the rest of the gang.

My gorgeous co-worker, Lakeisha.

Off to the beaches.

This was the same day we snorkeled out towards the ocean and I swam above a shark without even knowing it. My boss grabbed me and told me to stay calm and that there was a shark right below me. I looked down and saw how big it was. And yes, it was big. I freaked out and hugged my boss. Mel, my boss, and I swam to shore safe. There is a longer version to this story. But I freak myself out everytime I think about it. I'm waiting for my boss to develop the underwater photos so I can share with you the horror. He thought it was funny. I obviously want to smack him across the face.

We saw a monk seal hanging out outside our hotel on the beach. The monk seal is an endangered specie with only an estimated 1,200 remaining in the world. How cool is that?!

Lily and I.

My Melody.

On our hike up to the tippy top of Diamond Head Crater the very next morning.

We woke up early in the morning to do this hike so we could watch the sunrise. Apparently crowds of people beat us to it.

Japanese tourist everywhere!

More Japanese tourist and Honolulu in the background.

Waikiki Beach in the morning.

This.

Is.

Love.

Getting ready for the 16 mile hike... ON OUR VACATION! My boss and James behind me.

View above the trees.

Manoa Falls.

That's me tempted to take my clothes off and dip into the pool of cold mountain water. It gets really hot in the jungle.

Boss man and James surrounded in bamboo trees.

We ran into this random man in the jungle. He probably lives somewhere in the trees. He says his name is Harold. But it's probably Mohipupunakoki.

View of a valley during our hike.

We attended a luau in Paradise Cove - which is somewhere I can't tell you because I really don't know my ways around the island and that is why you pay good money for internet to do the research.

Honestly, I prefer the luau in Maui (Lahaina) over this one because it really wasn't that great. The Maui luau wasn't all that great either which says a lot about how god awful this one was. However, if you do drink enough mai-tai's with your friends/co-workers, it's not so bad.

The pig.

And of course, the guy with the flaming batons at each end of the stick. This was kind of cool. It's like a raver with glowsticks, but on steroids.

It began to rain on our way to Pearl Harbor. It really sets the mood for whats to come.

Mel not happy with the rain and traffic.

...which makes for good PICTURE TIME!

The USS Arizona memorial. Unfortunately we did not make it to the last ferry to see the actual sunken battleship. But we did visit the visitor's center and enlightened ourselves with some good ol' US history... ON OUR VACATION!

I sat on this bench when I took this photo overlooking the harbor and thought to myself, "Holy shit, Japanese fighter planes hovered across these skies and totally pwned the US... I really miss playing TF2 with Leo... I would so want to be a soldier right now."

Sunset at the famous North Shore. The waves were calmer that day.

A closer look at the sunset. This is love.

Eating Mexican food for dinner at North Shore with the gang. On the right is me pouring Splenda into my ice tea. That was probably my 6th packet. I never use less than that.

Back in Waikiki there was some drinking.

And then some drunk karaoke.

And where there is drunk karaoke, there is drunk people. I do not know what is wrong with my face in that photo.

What I do know is, we had one hell of a time.

But Hawaii is for lovers.

And my lover was back home.

So I left.

Alcatraz

The following photos are from yesterday's trip to Alcatraz. Leo's boss, Colin, was nice enough to invite our family to join his family for the fun filled trip. He's such a cool boss. So cool, I even play online video games with him. Why can't everyone's boss be this great?

Photo of the Bay Bridge from the ferry.

This cute boy was sitting right in front of us. He kept pointing out the dinosaurs on his rain coat.

Still blingin'.

It's all good in that hood.

Windows from inside of the penitentiary.

The cells and the infamous "D Block."

Kailee doing her time.

Cry me a river, baby.

Boss' son, Kyle. Apparently, he's standing inside the haunted cell, cell 14 in D Block. Lots of people have died in here and has also been known to be colder than the other cells. Unexplainable paranormal activities has made this cell particularly famous.

Recreation area of the prison. And old stomping grounds of George "Machine Gun" Kelly.

Another part of the recreation area where the inmates would play baseball.

Leo's boss, Colin, and his family.

First lighthouse to direct boats going through the Golden Gate Bridge.

There were a few things that I was hoping to see, but didn't. Like Al Capone's prison cell. Oh well. That's why we have the internet.

Monthly self portrait: In the car after the park

Today was a good day. We went to Central Park this morning to kill some time before Kailee's dental appointment. Kailee played in the playground while Leo taught me some football moves. Afterwards we went to Golf Land where I kicked Leo's butt. Then he answered back with some serious NBA arcade basketball.

A moment to reflect

I know. I'm a procrastinator. This post is over due. Suck it.

So...what can I say about 2007? Well, 2 major milestones happened. Getting through one year of being married and moving to a new city. That pretty much sums up the excitement of that year. The End.

Haha. All right. 2007 was not a bad year or a good year for me. You know, I lied. It was such a sad year for me. One, I missed my friends and family. Two, I was unemployed for almost a quarter of the year. Three, I've cried myself to sleep a lot. But on the same token, I am happy to be alive and healthy. My family is good. Friends are great. So lots to be thankful for.

(This is the part where I get really serious and semi-sappy)

Last year was the biggest wake up call that I am indeed a full fledged adult. Such a trip. The whole moving thing and trying to get our house rented out. Finding a job in a new city. It was scary and liberating at the same time. Scary because it was all so new. Liberating because I can finally live my life without any distractions and really focus on my own family. Lots of good descisions were made that year. But we won't really know how it pans out till a year from August.

Last month marked our one year wedding anniversary. There were a few bumps in the road. No major bumps. But enough to say that this marriage is definitely NORMAL. Moving was the ultimate test of patience for the both of us. Leo and I would fight about the stupidest things. For example, while we were trying to rent our condo out, we got in a huge fight about the paint on the walls. We've tried several types of white paint and made several trips to Home Depot. Leo was frustrated because he refused to paint over the new paint after I told him that "it didn't fucking look right." So instead, we hired some migrant workers. We were so tired and overwhelmed with all the changes that we were both going to go through. I had recently quit my job and so our finances were strapped. It was so bad that we both fell to our knees and cried. Embraced each other and said we were sorry. I remember sitting on the ground of our empty house just reaking of paint and my shirt all soaked in tears. At the time, this was not something I wanted to share on my blog. Although I did blog a lot during July, I remained coy about my feelings. It was a rather difficult moment. Lots of yelling and crying involved. Lots of curse words being thrown back and forth. It wasn't the best of times. But by god, am I glad it's over.

So now we are in 2008. We celebrated new years at home. And for the first time we celebrated it quietly. We watched the ball drop from the comfort of our living room. Although the excitement wasn't there, I was secretly celebrating that 2008 was here to stay for awhile. And that this would be a time to start over, move forward, and leave all that shit behind.

Photos from the move (via crappy camera phone, pre iPhone days):

My dog, Cookie, and the paint cans we cried over.

One of the two migrant workers we hired.

I cancelled my flight and decided to drive Leo's car up to the Bay. So I packed it with the left over crap and some over night clothes. The rest of the stuff in our house was in a seperate trailer heading for the Bay the following week.

My car being trailered for the long journey. This will be the last time it will see San Diego ever.

There is NOTHING IN MIDDLE CALIFORNIA. It was quiet a depressing drive after LA. The coastal scenic routh (I heard) is beautiful. This was the fastest way.

House warming package from dad - so we don't forget who we are when we look at ourselves in the mirror.

Cookie looking out from the window of our new house. This was his first day home.

Feeling a little better

I've been sick for a few weeks now. I came down with a really bad cough and cold. So bad that I've lost my voice more than once. Off and on. I have thyroid problems and most days I am so fucking fatigued out it drives me nuts. Going to see a doctor next week. This is the longest I've ever been sick and I can't stand it anymore. I can't even type up a decent post without sounding like I want to shoot my fucking leg off. Finally, after weeks of being ill, I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Since we are newbies to the area, we are now experiencing the rainy season in Nor. Cal. All I can say is wow wow wow wow. It doesn't stop. In the course of 5 months we have lived here, we've already experienced bad storms and two earthquakes. One of the earthquakes we actually slept through. Haha.

About the (fairly) new job, it's great. Best place I've ever worked for thus far.

Everyone back at home (San Diego) seem to be doing great. I heard my older bro finally got a job. A decent one. Yay! There were people in San Diego that I really really miss that wasn't able to see during Christmas weekend. I was bummed. I didn't realize how bummed I was until I got over being pissed off about the holidays. Which was seriously, um, today. Haha. I told you I was in really weird funk.

Here's a random photo of a really cute puppy taken awhile ago by Leo at Petco. It was some stranger's dog but I couldn't refuse the cuteness. I was like, "excuse me sir, but can I pet your dog?" Haha.

Finally, I just want to say that I am back to posting mode. I feel so out of touch with my internet friends. Feel free to hit me up whenever.

Hella cold

This morning, I dropped Kailee off to her religion school wearing layers and layers of clothing. Moving up here, I don't think we were prepared for winters like this because we figured it's still California. NO. I was wrong. Huge difference. But I must say that winters up here are a lot prettier than the south because trees are gold and red. And everywhere you go, leaves are falling and homes are more festive unlike San Diego. People really get into it over here. I even noticed that with my new co-workers. They are so damn jolly and spirited. I don't know whether to put a gun to my head or bake cookies for the office. Despite the weather and carne asadaless fries, the Bay Area has been good to us. And I'm really looking forward to our first New Years in San Francisco!

Our front yard and our humongous tree, it's so bare:

New Avatar

So every account I have online that requires an avatar, I always use this. A photo I took 2.5 years ago:

However, I'm getting kind of bored with it and some guy(s) whom I'ved played online video games with try to get fresh with me. And really, it's not a good looking picture. At least those were not my intentions.

So the new look is this. Not much has changed, as you can tell:

Kind of confused/worried look. I'm sure I can take a better picture than that where my ass and cleavage is all like WHOA. But then I'm affraid of getting a call from Tila Tequila saying she wants her look back. Plus I lack motivation.

Ok. So I didn't feel like blogging today even though I had an awesome weekend. Just know that I had an awesome weekend so I can conserve my finger energy for more important things. Yes, yes. I cut my hair. A lot of it. And even stripped it back to it's natural color. Why? Not quiet sure. Maybe because I was going for the boring Asian look. I dunno. I'll be releasing a new vlog soon, so I made sure I took photos so there will be no surprises. I know what you are going to say. So please spare me the negative feedback, will ya?

Monthly self-portrait: New glasses, again

But this time for good. I'm getting old and I realized the other day that my right eye is not as hot as it use to be. It first started with migraines, then drying of the eyes, and then neck/back pain. Continued to happen for two weeks. Two weeks of pain killers and lots of whining (with cheese and crackers, Erin, yes, har-har). Obviously it was something that I was doing on a daily basis because it wasn't getting any better. Hello, internet? See what happens when you are unemployed and looking? You stress yourself blind and retarded. I told the optometrist that I might have gone cock-eyed in the past few days. She asked me how I would even know that? I told her I have YouTube videos to prove it.

Blogging: A lose/lose situation

On the previous post, Erin had left a comment on which really motivated me to type up this long post about "blogging." So motivating, I went to Jamba Juice in my pajamas to pick up a drink with a double shot of energy boost at 8:48am. The place opened at 9.

So let's get really real here.

I started blogging since the age of 15 - which is a fact that I'm really proud of. I never had an actual notebook type of diary because I was an attention whore. I always had friends I confided to about life because I found it easier to never deal with problems alone.

About the time I was 16, I was going through a shit load of changes. Hormones, boys, being a jock, high school dances, conservative/traditional Asian parents, rebelling. You get the picture. Finding out the various platforms to use so I can publicly speak my mind, I found Blogger. Before Blogger, I used FrontPage and other free crappy publishing programs that served it's purpose but failed to appeal. Apparently
